What you will learn
A long calculation can be easy to lose track of. You do not need to add every number from left to right. First find pairs that make ten. You can also group equal numbers. When subtraction appears, keep each sign with its number.
1. Find pairs that make ten
Look at the whole row before calculating. Find two numbers that add to 10. The pairs are 1–9, 2–8, 3–7, 4–6 and 5–5. In 7 + 5 + 3, pair 7 with 3 first. They make 10. Then add 5 to get 15. Only reorder numbers when they are all being added.
2. Group equal numbers
Look at 4 + 2 + 4 + 2 + 4. There are three 4s. They add to 12. There are also two 2s. They add to 4. Finally, 12 plus 4 equals 16. This is repeated addition. You do not need multiplication yet.
3. Keep each sign with its number
Look at 9 − 4 + 1 + 4. The first 4 has a minus sign. The last 4 has a plus sign. The −4 and +4 cancel each other. Only 9 + 1 remains, so the answer is 10. Never move a number without its sign.
4. Choose a quick method
First find pairs that make ten. Next group equal numbers. Then find matching plus and minus cards. Finally calculate the numbers left over. A short row can still be done in order. Choose the method with fewer steps.
5. Check your answer
Cross out each number after using it. Use every number exactly once. Then calculate again in the original order. Both methods must give the same answer.
