What this teaches
This lesson teaches your child that a shape turned on its side is still the same shape, because the number of sides and corners never changes. They also learn to pick the odd one out by a clear rule, and to tell a shadow from a mirror image.
Needed beforehand
Your child needs to name squares, circles and triangles, and to count the sides of a shape.

  • “What do the other three have in common? What makes this one different?”
  • “Is this a shadow or a mirror image? How can you tell?”

What you will learn

International papers often show a row of shapes and ask which one is different. Sometimes a shape is turned around to trick your eyes. This topic teaches you to look for the features that never change. You also learn to read shadows and mirror images. Then you can choose the answer instead of guessing.

1. Turning a shape does not change it

Take a square card and turn it on its corner. It now looks like a diamond but it is still a square. It still has 4 equal sides and 4 right angles. The number of sides and angles never changes when you turn it. So name a shape by counting sides and angles. Do not judge by how it is tilted.

2. Picking the odd one out

A question shows four shapes and asks which is different. List the features of each shape first. Useful features are number of sides, colour and size. A good question has only one deciding feature. For example three circles and one triangle. Here the feature is shape, not colour. If you find two features, choose the one that splits 3 against 1.

3. Shadows and mirror images

A shadow is the dark patch cast on the ground. A shadow keeps the outline of the object. It does not keep the colour or the inside details. A mirror image is different: it is flipped left to right. The letter R in a side mirror faces the other way. A few letters such as A, H and M look the same in a mirror. Those letters have a vertical line of symmetry.

4. The missing piece

Some questions cut a piece out and ask which piece fits. Look at the two edges of the hole first. The right piece must match both the length and the angle. Try fitting each option into the hole.

5. Check your answer

Read the question once more. Check that your choice rests on exactly one feature. If the other three options match each other, your choice is right.
