What this teaches
This lesson teaches your child to see the rule behind a number sequence: how much is added or taken away each time. They can then fill in a missing number and work out the tenth term without writing the whole list.
Needed beforehand
Your child needs to count on, count back, and add and subtract within 100.
Ask your child
  • “How much do you add to get from this number to the next?”
  • “Try one more pair - is the step the same?”
  • “How many jumps to reach the sixth number?”
When to move on
Your child finds the step by checking two pairs, then fills a gap in the middle of the sequence correctly.

What you will learn

An arithmetic sequence adds or subtracts the same number each time. For example 2, 4, 6, 8 adds 2 each time. You will learn to find a missing number and the n-th term.

1. Spot an arithmetic sequence

Subtract each number from the next one.

  • 3, 6, 9, 12 gives 3, 3, 3. This is an arithmetic sequence.
  • 1, 2, 4, 7 gives 1, 2, 3. The step grows each time.

The number added each time is called the common difference. Check at least two pairs. One pair is not enough.

2. Step by step

Step 1. Find the step by subtracting two neighbours. Step 2. Add if the sequence goes up. Subtract if it goes down. Step 3. To reach the n-th term you jump n minus 1 times. In 4, 9, 14, 19 the step is 5. The 6th term needs 5 jumps: 4 plus 25 equals 29.

3. Two more shapes

Mixed sequence. In 20, 1, 19, 2, 18, 3 two sequences are woven together: 20, 19, 18 and 1, 2, 3. Split them first. Counting terms. From 3 to 27 in steps of 3: divide the difference by the step, then add 1. That is 24 divided by 3 equals 8, plus 1 equals 9 terms.

4. Check your answer

Put your number back and subtract along the row. All the differences must match.

To find the 11th term you do not need to write all 11 numbers. There are 10 jumps from the 1st term to the 11th. If each jump is 5, you move 10 times 5, that is 50. Multiplication here is just a short way to write repeated addition.
