What this teaches
Grade 1 books stop before carrying and borrowing, but olympiad papers do not. This lesson teaches your child to line up the columns, carry one ten when adding and borrow one ten when subtracting, with two- and three-digit numbers.
Needed beforehand
Your child needs fluent addition and subtraction within 20, and to know how many tens and ones a number has.

What you will learn

Grade 1 books only teach adding and subtracting without regrouping. International papers also ask for carrying and for three-digit numbers. This topic shows you how to carry one ten. You also learn to borrow one ten when subtracting. Finally you learn to line the columns up properly.

1. Tens and ones again

The number 47 has 4 tens and 7 ones. When you set out a sum, ones must sit under ones. Tens must sit under tens as well. One misplaced column spoils the whole answer. Put the larger number on top so it is easier to read.

2. Adding with carrying

Look at 27 + 15. Add the ones first: 7 + 5 = 12. Twelve is 1 ten and 2 ones. Write the 2 in the ones column. That extra ten is carried into the tens column. Now the tens: 2 + 1 = 3, plus the carried 1 makes 4. The answer is 42. Write the carried digit small above the tens column.

3. Subtracting with borrowing

Look at 51 - 18. In the ones column 1 - 8 cannot be done. So you borrow one ten from the tens column. One ten becomes 10 ones. Now 11 - 8 = 3. The tens column lent one away, so only 4 are left. Then 4 - 1 = 3, and the answer is 33. Cross out the old tens digit and write the new one.

4. Three-digit numbers

The number 356 is 3 hundreds, 5 tens and 6 ones. The method is exactly the same as above. Work from right to left: ones, tens, then hundreds. A carried digit goes into the column just to its left.

5. Rows with both signs

Look at 14 - 26 + 38. From left to right, 14 - 26 cannot be done. Reorder it as 14 + 38, then subtract 26. Every number keeps the sign written in front of it.

6. Check your work

Add back what you subtracted. If you get the first number again, you were right. For addition, swap the two numbers and add again. Redo it once on scrap paper to be sure.
